The good & the bad
The good
- ▲160 kW and 520 Nm from the 2.5 turbo diesel, through a ZF eight-speed automatic - a proper torque-converter gearbox, not a dual clutch
- ▲BorgWarner intelligent transfer case with front and rear electronically controlled differential locks, 12 driving modes and 3 steering modes
- ▲Tows 3,500 kg braked with a 770 kg payload
- ▲550 mm wading depth and 220 mm ground clearance
- ▲A full ADAS suite is standard: autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise, lane keep and lane change assist, blind spot detection, driver monitoring and a 360-degree camera
- ▲Seven airbags, including a far-side airbag, which is rare on a pickup at any price
The bad
- ▼MG PUBLISHES NO FUEL CONSUMPTION FIGURE for the U9. The technical specification sheet gives power, torque and an 80-litre tank and stops there, so there is no manufacturer number to hold it to
- ▼At PKR 2.87 crore it is priced against established double cabs with far deeper dealer and parts networks in Pakistan
- ▼2,550 kg kerb weight means the running costs of a heavy vehicle whatever the consumption turns out to be
- ▼One variant only - no cheaper entry point into the range
- ▼MG's service network here, while growing, is smaller than Toyota's for a vehicle this type of buyer often works hard
