JAECOO J7 SHS 2026 pros & cons

✓ What we like

  • Extraordinary performance for the price - 341 hp and 525 Nm, 0 to 100 km/h in a claimed 8.5 seconds, in a Rs 1 crore crossover
  • The plug-in system genuinely works here. A documented owner at 12,500 km reported 93.5 km of real electric range, above the claimed 90, and about 21.5 km/l combined
  • Running costs check out: that owner spent roughly Rs 50,000 on electricity where a petrol SUV would have cost around Rs 2 lacs in fuel
  • Uses a dedicated hybrid transmission, not a dual-clutch, so it avoids the stop-start gearbox problem of the turbo-DCT crossovers
  • Locally assembled, with a genuine Rs 5 lac price cut in September 2026 and a one-month delivery window
  • The 18.3 kWh battery is large enough that a normal urban commute runs entirely on electricity, which is where the tariff arbitrage against petrol actually pays

✕ What we don't like

  • Plug-in hybrids were excluded from the September 2026 GST relief and remain at 25 percent, so the J7 carries a structural tax disadvantage against every locally assembled full hybrid
  • The plug-in case depends on reliable home charging. With load-shedding, apartment living without dedicated parking and rising tariffs, many buyers will run it as a heavy conventional hybrid and never see the quoted economy
  • Assembly quality is not yet settled. The best-documented Pakistani owner reported door misalignment on delivery, a squeaking panoramic sunroof and rear suspension noise, all within 12,500 km
  • No resale track record at all, and an unproven high-voltage battery makes used valuation worse - buyers discount used PHEVs heavily when battery health cannot be verified
  • Service and parts for a 400-volt system depend on a dealer network barely a year old and effectively absent outside four cities. A high-voltage fault in Sukkur is not a local repair
  • Heavy at around 2,210 kg, which shows in tyre and brake wear, and the 412-litre boot is small for the class because of the battery pack

JAECOO J7 SHS 2026 overview

The JAECOO J7 SHS is the plug-in hybrid version of JAECOO's mid-size crossover, launched in Pakistan on 21 October 2025 by NexGen Auto with Nishat Motors, with deliveries from mid-December 2025. It is locally assembled at Faisalabad. The J7 is a size and a price class above the J5, at 4,500 mm long on a 2,672 mm wheelbase.

SHS stands for Super Hybrid System, Chery's plug-in architecture. The J7 combines a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine with an 18.3 kWh battery and a dedicated hybrid transmission for a combined 341 hp and 525 Nm, with a claimed 90 km-plus of pure electric range and over 1,200 km combined. That makes it one of the most powerful vehicles anywhere near its price in Pakistan, and the electric range is enough that a typical Lahore or Karachi commute can be done without starting the engine.

It competes against the Chery Tiggo 7 and Tiggo 8 PHEVs from within the same group, the Haval H6 PHEV, and its own showroom sibling the Omoda 7 SHS-P, which uses essentially the same powertrain in a different body at a higher price.

Its position in late 2026 is unusually favourable. Because plug-in hybrids were left out of the September GST relief and remain at 25 percent, NexGen could have simply held price - instead it cut the J7 by Rs 5 lacs on 14 September, a commercial move to stay competitive against Chery's own discounted Tiggo PHEVs.

Engine and performance

The J7 SHS is a plug-in hybrid. A 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol four is paired with electric drive and an 18.3 kWh battery through a dedicated hybrid transmission, producing a combined 341 hp and 525 Nm to the front wheels. JAECOO claims over 90 km of pure electric range, a 60-litre tank and over 1,200 km combined, with 0 to 100 km/h in 8.5 seconds. The battery charges from mains and is warranted for eight years or 160,000 km. Three hybrid modes control how aggressively the system holds or spends charge, which matters here because holding charge for the return leg of a commute is the difference between 20 km/l and 12.

Fuel economy

The J7 has the best real-world Pakistani data of any plug-in in this class, because a detailed owner review covering 12,500 km has been published locally. That owner recorded about 21.5 km/l combined, 15 to 20 km/l in hybrid mode in the city with the battery depleted, and 93.5 km of genuine electric range - slightly better than claimed. The critical caveat is that these are the numbers of an owner who charges at home regularly. A J7 driven without plugging in behaves as a 2,210 kg petrol hybrid and will return low-to-mid teens at best. Anyone quoting 21 km/l without stating their charging routine is quoting a number that does not transfer.
