JAECOO is Chery's SUV-focused export brand, run in Pakistan by NexGen Auto, a Nishat Group company operating with Chery International. NexGen assembles Omoda and JAECOO vehicles near Faisalabad, delivered its first locally assembled car in December 2025, and announced its 10,000th unit in August 2026 - the fastest local ramp of any new brand in the market.
The J5 is a subcompact crossover, 4,380 mm long with 176 mm of ground clearance, powered by Chery's SHS full-hybrid system. Pricing was revealed on 11 January 2026 at Rs 66.99 lacs for the Comfort and Rs 76.99 lacs for the Premium on introductory terms. It is the smallest and cheapest full hybrid crossover assembled in Pakistan, pitched at buyers who wanted hybrid running costs without the Rs 90 lac-plus entry ticket of the Corolla Cross HEV or HR-V e:HEV.
It is awkward to place competitively because it undercuts the hybrid crossovers but overlaps the B-segment. Its real rivals are the Suzuki Fronx hybrid - which is a mild hybrid, not a full one, and much cheaper - the Jolion HEV from above, and Chery's own Tiggo range from within the same group.
The J5's core proposition is performance per rupee: 221 hp combined from a 1.5-litre turbo hybrid in a car this size is far more than anything else in its price band. Note that NexGen also sells a battery-electric J5 Premium Plus locally, so the nameplate covers two unrelated powertrains - check which one a quotation refers to.
The J5 SHS is a full hybrid - self-charging, with no plug. A 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol four is combined with an electric motor and a traction battery of about 1.83 kWh, driving the front wheels through a dedicated hybrid transmission. Combined output is 221 hp and 295 Nm, enough for a claimed 0 to 100 km/h of 7.9 seconds, with a WLTP combined figure of about 18.9 km/l. The tank holds 51 litres and JAECOO claims over 950 km of combined range. The battery is warranted for eight years or 160,000 km. The separate J5 Premium Plus sold locally is a different car entirely - battery-electric, 58.9 kWh, 207 hp, up to 481 km of claimed range.
The J5 has been on sale since January 2026, so there is early but real owner data rather than only factory claims. A published Pakistani owner review reported 21 km/l on long routes and 16 to 17 km/l in city driving during break-in, expecting a settled average around 17 to 18, with roughly 900 km from a full tank. That is close to the 18.9 km/l WLTP figure - unusually honest for the segment, and a consequence of the hybrid doing most of its work at low speeds. The caveat is sample size: this is one well-documented car and a handful of forum reports, not the thousands of data points behind a Corolla Cross figure.
