Our takeCarMania research desk

The Toyota Yaris sold in Europe and Japan is a 116 PS full-hybrid hatchback certified as low as 3.8 l/100 km - 26.3 km/l. The Toyota Yaris sold in Pakistan is a petrol sedan on an older platform with a 1.3 or 1.5 and a conventional CVT, known as the Vios in most of Asia. They share a badge and nothing mechanical. If you are comparing a Pakistani Yaris against a review from a European or Japanese publication, you are comparing two unrelated cars.

Each market tests to its own legal cycle, so these numbers describe the same engine measured three different ways. Read down a market, not across them. Figures are shown in km/l, with the market's own published unit beneath it wherever that unit differs.

This is not the car Pakistan calls a Yaris. Europe and Japan sell the Yaris as a full-hybrid hatchback on Toyota's current small-car platform: a 92 PS three-cylinder and an 80 PS motor combining for 116 PS through an e-CVT, in a body weighing as little as 1,085 kg. It is certified between 3.8 and 4.9 l/100 km depending on trim and wheel size - 26.3 down to 20.4 km/l - with CO2 from 87 g/km. Pakistan's Yaris is a petrol sedan on the older platform; the two share a badge and nothing mechanical. Certified on Europe's WLTP cycle, measured in a laboratory on a rolling road. More realistic than the NEDC test it replaced, but still a lab figure that Pakistani traffic, heat and fuel will not reproduce.

The car Pakistan's Yaris is actually related to. Sold as the Yaris Ativ in Thailand and the Vios elsewhere in South-East Asia, this is the small-sedan line built for emerging markets - a traditional boot, a longer wheelbase and a naturally aspirated engine, in this generation a 1.2 making 94 PS against the 1.3 and 1.5 Pakistan is offered. No certified fuel figure for this exact variant could be sourced, so none is quoted here rather than printing an estimate as though it were one.

Europe and Australia certify in litres per 100 km; the km/l figure above it is our conversion, at 100 ÷ l per 100 km. Korea certifies in km/l, so those rows carry the published figure alone and no converted one.

Where the difference lies

What the international specification genuinely gains, and what it does not.

Genuinely better abroad

  • ▲The hybrid hatchback is one of the most efficient cars sold anywhere that is not a plug-in, certified as low as 3.8 l/100 km
  • ▲At 1,085 kg it is light by modern standards, which is why it achieves that without a large battery
  • ▲A full hybrid with no plug and no charging requirement, on Toyota's longest-running and best-proven hybrid architecture
  • ▲The GR Yaris gives the nameplate a genuine performance version with a 1.6 turbo and four-wheel drive

Caveats worth keeping in mind

  • ▼It is not sold in Pakistan, has never been sold in Pakistan, and no version of it has been announced
  • ▼The shared name actively misleads: searching "Toyota Yaris review" from Pakistan returns reviews of a car you cannot buy
  • ▼The 3.8 l/100 km figure is the base trim; larger wheels and higher trims take it to 4.9, which is a 29 per cent swing
  • ▼WLTP is a laboratory cycle, and Pakistani heat, traffic and fuel would not reproduce either end of that range
  • ▼For what Pakistan actually sells under this badge, see our Pakistani Yaris pages instead

The Toyota Yaris abroad

If you have been reading reviews of the Toyota Yaris online and liking what you see, there is something you need to know first: that is almost certainly not the car Toyota sells in Pakistan.

In Europe and Japan, the Yaris is a small hatchback built on Toyota's current compact platform, and it is a full hybrid. A 92 PS three-cylinder works with an 80 PS electric motor for 116 PS of system output through an e-CVT, in a body that weighs as little as 1,085 kg. It is certified between 3.8 and 4.9 litres per 100 km depending on trim and wheel size - 26.3 down to 20.4 km/l - and emits from 87 g/km of CO2. There is a performance version, the GR Yaris, with a 1.6 turbo and four-wheel drive.

Pakistan's Yaris is a petrol sedan. It sits on the older XP150 platform, has a boot rather than a hatch, and is offered with a 1.3 or a 1.5 driving the front wheels through a conventional CVT. Elsewhere in Asia that car is called the Vios, or the Yaris Ativ in Thailand.

They are not variants of each other. They do not share a body, a platform or a powertrain. Toyota simply uses the Yaris name for a hatchback in one half of the world and a sedan in the other, and the two have drifted a long way apart.

Key points

Engines and gearboxes

The European and Japanese Yaris uses a 1,490 cc three-cylinder petrol engine rated at 92 PS at 5,500 rpm with 120 Nm, combined with an 80 PS electric motor and a 0.76 kWh lithium-ion battery for a system output of 116 PS and 141 Nm. Drive goes to the front wheels through an e-CVT. It reaches 100 km/h in 9.7 seconds, tops out at 175 km/h, runs a 36-litre tank and meets Euro 6 AP. Kerb weight is 1,085 to 1,185 kg depending on trim.

The Thai and ASEAN Yaris Ativ, which is the Vios and the closest relative of Pakistan's car, uses a 1,197 cc Dual VVT-iE four making 94 PS and 110 Nm through a CVT.

Pakistan's Yaris uses a 1.3 or 1.5 petrol four with a CVT or manual, and is not related to the hybrid hatchback in any component that matters.

How to read these figures

The hybrid hatchback is certified at 3.8 to 4.9 l/100 km combined on WLTP, which is 26.3 down to 20.4 km/l. The spread is entirely trim and wheel size; the lightest car on the smallest wheels achieves the best figure.

That is a laboratory result on a rolling road in a temperate climate, and it should not be read as something a Pakistani driver would see even if the car were sold here.

No certified figure could be sourced for the Thai Yaris Ativ in the exact specification listed here, so none is quoted rather than printing an estimate as though it were a certification.

For what the Yaris actually returns in Pakistan, our Pakistani pages carry owner-reported figures for the 1.3 and 1.5: around 12 to 13 km/l in the city and 15.5 to 16.5 on the highway.

Safety

The European Yaris was awarded five stars by Euro NCAP in 2020, with Toyota Safety Sense fitted as standard - autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-keeping assist, road-sign recognition and adaptive cruise control across the range.

That rating and that equipment belong to the hybrid hatchback and to no car sold in Pakistan. The Pakistani Yaris is a different vehicle on a different platform and has never been crash-tested under any programme, because Pakistan has none.

This is the most important practical consequence of the shared name: a buyer who assumes the Pakistani Yaris inherits a five-star European rating is mistaken, and the mistake is one the badge invites.

FAQ

Is the Toyota Yaris in Pakistan the same as the one in Europe?

No, and they are not even closely related. Europe and Japan sell the Yaris as a full-hybrid hatchback on Toyota's current compact platform. Pakistan sells a petrol sedan on the older XP150 platform, which most of Asia calls the Vios. They share no body, no platform and no powertrain.

Does the Toyota Yaris hybrid come to Pakistan?

No. The hybrid hatchback has never been offered in Pakistan and no version of it has been announced. Pakistan's Yaris is petrol only.

What is the fuel average of the Toyota Yaris hybrid?

Between 3.8 and 4.9 l/100 km on Europe's WLTP cycle, which is 26.3 down to 20.4 km/l, depending on trim and wheel size. That is a laboratory figure. Pakistani owners of the petrol Yaris sold here report about 12 to 13 km/l in the city and 15.5 to 16.5 on the highway.

Why do reviews of the Toyota Yaris not match the car sold in Pakistan?

Because they are usually reviewing a different car. Toyota uses the Yaris name for a hybrid hatchback in Europe and Japan and for a small sedan in Asia, and the two have drifted far apart. Check whether the review describes a hatchback with a hybrid - if so, it does not apply to the Pakistani car.

Does the Pakistani Yaris have the European car's five-star safety rating?

No. Euro NCAP's five stars belong to the European hybrid hatchback, which has Toyota Safety Sense as standard. Pakistan's Yaris is a different vehicle on a different platform, has none of that equipment, and has never been crash-tested - Pakistan has no testing programme.
