Range and efficiency

Claimed range426 km
Battery65.6 kWh
Efficiency6.5 kmper kWh

An electric car has no fuel average. The figure that matters is range, and the 426 km above is the manufacturer's claim on its home market's test cycle — Pakistani heat and air-conditioning use will not reproduce it. At 6.5 km per kWh, your cost per kilometre is your own electricity tariff divided by 6.5. We do not print a rupee figure because domestic tariffs in Pakistan are slabbed, and a single number would be wrong for most households.

Verified fuel figures for this variant are not available yet.
The long-range rear-drive J6. Worth knowing: at 426 km NEDC it goes FURTHER than the dearer Premium AWD, which manages 418 km on a larger 69.7 kWh pack because it carries a second motor and 19-inch wheels. JAECOO quotes 17.9 kWh/100 km.

Our takeCarMania research desk

The most interesting thing about the J6 range is that the cheapest car and the dearest car are equipped almost identically. Across a Rs 20 lac spread you get the same 360-degree camera, the same panoramic roof, the same 15.6-inch screen, the same ventilated front and rear seats and the same six airbags. What changes is the battery, and on the top car a second motor. That makes the choice unusually clean. The Luxury RWD is the one to buy. It has the longest range in the range at 426 km NEDC - further than the Premium AWD above it - costs Rs 9 lac less than that car, and gives up only acceleration most owners will never use. The Comfort's 329 km is thin for a PKR 88 lac electric car once the NEDC optimism is discounted; the Luxury's extra Rs 11 lac buys nearly 100 km of real-world margin, which is the difference between an intercity car and a city one. The Premium AWD earns its money only if you want the performance or genuinely need all-wheel drive - it adds five off-road drive modes, an Infinity 12-speaker system and electric leg support, and takes 6.5 seconds to 100 km/h. It also runs 19-inch wheels on 225/55 rubber, which is more exposed on Pakistani roads than the 18s with their taller 225/60 sidewall. The caveat for all three is the same caveat as every electric car sold here: 80 kW DC charging is respectable, but Pakistan's public network is thin outside the big three cities, so this is a car for someone who can charge at home.

The good & the bad

The good

  • ▲The Luxury RWD's 426 km of NEDC range is the longest in the range and costs Rs 9 lac less than the Premium AWD above it
  • ▲Equipment is near-identical across all three variants - even the entry Comfort gets a 360-degree camera, panoramic sunroof, 15.6-inch screen and ventilated seats
  • ▲Ventilated REAR seats as well as front, which is rare at any price in Pakistan and genuinely useful in summer
  • ▲An all-aluminium body, which resists corrosion and saves weight
  • ▲3.3 kW vehicle-to-load on every variant - enough to run household appliances during load-shedding
  • ▲80 kW DC charging and 6.6 kW AC on all three
  • ▲195 mm of ground clearance and a 450-litre boot
  • ▲The Premium AWD reaches 100 km/h in 6.5 seconds and adds All-road, Slippery, Beach, Muddy and Bumpy drive modes
  • ▲6 years or 150,000 km vehicle warranty and 8 years or 160,000 km on the battery

The bad

  • ▼NexGen's J6 page claims eight airbags including a knee and a centre airbag; the brochure's own itemised table lists six on all three variants, and its own callout says "six airbags"
  • ▼The Comfort's 329 km NEDC is thin for a PKR 88 lac electric car - expect nearer 237 km in Pakistani conditions
  • ▼The Premium AWD costs Rs 9 lac more than the Luxury and travels 8 km less on a charge
  • ▼The Premium's 19-inch wheels on 225/55 tyres are more exposed to Pakistani roads than the 18s on the cheaper cars
  • ▼All range figures are NEDC, the most optimistic laboratory cycle
  • ▼No kerb weight is published for any variant
  • ▼NexGen's page quotes two different torsional stiffness figures, 23,000 and 31,812 Nm/deg, so neither is repeated here
  • ▼Pakistan's public fast-charging network is thin outside Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad, so this needs home charging to make sense

Safety

What is known about this car's safety in Pakistan
Start with a discrepancy in NexGen's own material, because it runs the wrong way.

The J6 model page says: "With dual front airbags, side airbags, a driver knee airbag, curtain airbags, and a center airbag between the front seats, you and your passengers are fully covered." That describes eight airbags.

The J6 brochure's itemised specification table lists, for all three variants: Front Dual Airbags, Front Side Airbags, Side Curtain Airbags. That is six, with no knee airbag and no centre airbag. The same brochure's feature page calls it a "SIX AIRBAGS SAFETY SYSTEM".

Two documents against one marketing page, so six is what this site publishes. If the knee and centre airbags matter to your decision, ask the dealer to confirm in writing against the vehicle's own specification sheet before booking.

What is consistent across all three variants: ISOFIX anchors, driver and front passenger seatbelt pretensioners, a 360-degree panoramic view camera, front and rear parking sensors, a built-in driving recorder, an anti-theft system, anti-lock brakes with brake assist, electronic brakeforce distribution, electronic stability control, traction control, hill-start assist, an electronic parking brake with autohold, and a tyre sealant and repair kit.

The driver-assistance package is the same on every variant too: adaptive cruise control, blind spot detection, lane change assist, lane departure prevention with corrective steering, and rear cross traffic brake, which applies the brakes rather than only warning.

The body is all-aluminium, which JAECOO says is 30 per cent more rigid than the steel equivalent. NexGen quotes two different torsional stiffness figures in the same material - 23,000 Nm/deg on the model page and 31,812 Nm/deg a few paragraphs later - so neither is repeated here as fact.

NexGen publishes no crash-test rating for the J6. Pakistan has no NCAP programme, so no car sold here carries an independent local crash rating.

FAQ

What is the price of the JAECOO J6 in Pakistan?

Three variants: Comfort RWD PKR 87,99,000, Luxury RWD PKR 98,99,000 and Premium AWD PKR 1,07,99,000, all ex-factory and inclusive of applicable taxes. NexGen adds Rs 55,000 per unit for freight and transit insurance, and booking takes a minimum 20 per cent advance.

Which JAECOO J6 has the longest range?

The Luxury RWD, at 426 km NEDC - and it is not the most expensive one. The Premium AWD carries a larger 69.7 kWh battery but manages 418 km, because a second motor, all-wheel drive and 19-inch wheels use more energy than the extra battery provides.

How many airbags does the JAECOO J6 have?

Six on all three variants - front dual, front side and side curtain - according to the brochure's itemised table and its own feature page. NexGen's website claims eight, adding a driver knee airbag and a centre airbag, which the brochure does not list. Confirm in writing if it matters to you.

What is the real range of the JAECOO J6?

JAECOO quotes 329, 426 and 418 km on NEDC for the Comfort, Luxury and Premium. NEDC is the most optimistic cycle; in Pakistani conditions expect nearer 237, 307 and 301 km respectively, and less in summer with the air conditioning running.

Which JAECOO J6 should I buy?

The Luxury RWD. It has the longest range of the three, costs Rs 9 lac less than the Premium AWD, and carries essentially the same equipment as both the others. The Comfort saves Rs 11 lac but gives up nearly 100 km of range, and the Premium buys acceleration rather than usefulness.

How fast does the JAECOO J6 charge?

6.6 kW on AC and up to 80 kW on DC, which JAECOO describes as an estimated figure, on all three variants. Most owners will charge at home on AC overnight - Pakistan's public DC network is thin outside Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad.

Does the JAECOO J6 have vehicle-to-load?

Yes, 3.3 kW on every variant, which will run household appliances from the drive battery during load-shedding.

What is the boot space of the JAECOO J6?

450 litres on all three variants, with 60/40 split-folding rear seats.

What is the warranty on a JAECOO J6?

Six years or 150,000 km on the vehicle and eight years or 160,000 km on the battery, whichever comes first, published on NexGen's brochure.

JAECOO J6 or BYD Atto 3?

The Atto 3 is PKR 89,90,000, between the J6 Comfort and Luxury. The J6 is the more distinctive car, has an all-aluminium body, ventilated rear as well as front seats and a longer published battery warranty. BYD has the longer track record in Pakistan and a more established service network, which on an electric car is not a small consideration.
