Our takeCarMania research desk

The Grande is the Corolla people aspire to and it does the job the Corolla has always done - it will be worth something in eight years, every mechanic knows it, and nothing about it will surprise you. But you are paying PKR 77.09 lacs for the chrome door handles and the lamps in the vanity mirrors, because mechanically it is the PKR 70.29 lac 1.8 CVT-i, and on safety it is every other Corolla: two airbags, no side, no curtain, no driver assistance. For PKR 15.9 lacs less than a Grande, the Corolla Cross 1.8 X has seven airbags and a great deal more equipment. The Grande's case rests almost entirely on resale value and status, and in Pakistan those are real arguments - just not safety ones.

The good & the bad

The good

  • ▲The strongest resale value of any sedan in Pakistan, and the Grande badge carries a premium of its own on the used market
  • ▲The most comprehensively trimmed Corolla - partial leather, leather gear lever, chrome handles, lit vanity mirrors, rear reading lamp
  • ▲138 hp and 173 Nm with a Sport CVT-i and paddle shift
  • ▲LED projection headlamps with auto levelling and daytime running lamps
  • ▲A 470-litre boot and a 2,700 mm wheelbase
  • ▲Vehicle stability control, cruise control and sports mode as on the other CVT Corollas
  • ▲Front and rear cameras and an auto-dimming inside mirror

The bad

  • ▼Two airbags at PKR 77,09,000 - the highest price in Pakistan for a car with driver and passenger airbags only
  • ▼Mechanically identical to the PKR 70,29,000 1.8 CVT-i, so PKR 6.8 lacs buys trim rather than hardware
  • ▼The two Grande versions differ only in interior colour, for PKR 40,000
  • ▼No driver assistance of any kind - no blind-spot monitor, no lane keeping, no autonomous braking
  • ▼The Corolla Cross 1.8 X costs PKR 15.9 lacs less and has seven airbags
  • ▼A torsion-beam rear axle at this price
  • ▼No independent crash rating exists for the car sold here

Safety

What is known about this car's safety in Pakistan
The Grande carries the same two airbags as every other Corolla - driver and passenger only, on Toyota's own specification sheet, which lists "SRS Airbag: Dual (Driver + Passenger Side)" for the whole Altis X range including the Grande.

At PKR 77,09,000 it is the most expensive two-airbag car sold in Pakistan.

What it does have: vehicle stability control, anti-lock braking with electronic brake distribution and brake assist, ISOFIX child seat anchors, an immobiliser with alarm, front and rear cameras and central locking with a speed-sensing lock.

What it does not have, at any price: front side airbags, side curtain airbags, a blind-spot monitor, lane keeping assist, autonomous emergency braking or adaptive cruise control.

For comparison inside the same showroom, the Corolla Cross 1.8 X at PKR 79,35,000 - PKR 2.26 lacs more than a Grande - carries seven airbags including knee and side curtains, along with traction control, hill-start assist, emergency brake signal and front and rear clearance sonar.

Pakistan has no NCAP programme, so the car sold here carries no independent crash rating.

FAQ

PKR 76,69,000 with the beige interior and PKR 77,09,000 with the black interior, suggested retail ex-factory Karachi.

What is the difference between the two Corolla Grande versions?

Interior colour only - beige or black. They are mechanically and specification-identical, separated by PKR 40,000.

How many airbags does the Toyota Corolla Grande have?

Two - driver and passenger. At PKR 77,09,000 it is the most expensive two-airbag car sold in Pakistan.

Is the Grande worth PKR 6.8 lacs more than the Corolla 1.8 CVT-i?

Mechanically they are the same car - same engine, same gearbox, same body, same two airbags. The Grande adds partial leather trim, a leather gear lever, chrome inside door handles, lit vanity mirrors, a rear reading lamp, a glove box lamp and a luggage tray. The real argument is resale value, where the Grande badge holds a premium.

What is the fuel average of the Toyota Corolla Grande?
