Range and efficiency

Claimed range344 km
Battery49.5 kWh
Efficiency6.9 kmper kWh

An electric car has no fuel average. The figure that matters is range, and the 344 km above is the manufacturer's claim on its home market's test cycle — Pakistani heat and air-conditioning use will not reproduce it. At 6.9 km per kWh, your cost per kilometre is your own electricity tariff divided by 6.9. We do not print a rupee figure because domestic tariffs in Pakistan are slabbed, and a single number would be wrong for most households.

Verified fuel figures for this variant are not available yet.
Pakistan's first locally assembled electric SUV, built by NexGen Auto, a Nishat Group subsidiary, and launched on 6 November 2026. Deliveries are stated to begin at the start of January 2027. 49.5 kWh, 344 km WLTP, 405 km NEDC on the brochure, 295 km EPA. 155 kW (208 hp) and 288 Nm through the front wheels, 0-100 km/h in 7.7 seconds. 130 kW DC and 11 kW AC charging, with 3.3 kW vehicle-to-load. 4,380 x 1,860 x 1,650 mm on a 2,620 mm wheelbase, 184 mm of ground clearance, 18-inch wheels, 480 litres of luggage space. THE CAR SHOWN AT PAPS IN SEPTEMBER 2026 WAS NOT THIS ONE: that was reported with a 58.9 kWh battery and 461 km NEDC. The launched car has 49.5 kWh and 405 km NEDC. Anyone working from the September coverage is working from a different battery. The power, torque and acceleration figures were published for the Premium; no separate set has been published for the Comfort.

A well-judged hybrid at a price nothing else here quite matches, and then one decision that matters more than everything else on the specification sheet. The powertrain is the easy part to like. 18.9 km/l on WLTP is a genuinely strong number for a 4.4-metre SUV, the dedicated hybrid transmission is smoother than the CVTs this segment usually offers, 7.9 seconds to 100 km/h is quicker than anything at the money, and because it never needs plugging in none of Pakistan's charging problem applies. The 6-year vehicle and 8-year battery warranty is among the longest here. The decision is Comfort against Premium, and it is not close. NexGen's own price list gives the Comfort dual front airbags and nothing else - no side airbags, no curtains - where the Premium has six. The Comfort also goes without a reversing camera, runs halogen headlamps, and has two speakers. For Rs 10 lac the Premium buys four airbags, blind spot detection, adaptive cruise, a 540-degree camera, LED lights and a far better cabin. On a car in this class that is not a trim upgrade, it is a different safety proposition. Buy the Premium. If the budget only reaches the Comfort, the honest advice is to look at what else Rs 70 lac buys with six airbags rather than to take this one.

The good & the bad

The good

  • ▲5.3 L/100 km on WLTP - about 18.9 km/l - which is excellent for a 4.4-metre SUV, and a claimed 950+ km of range
  • ▲A full hybrid that never needs charging, which sidesteps Pakistan's charging infrastructure problem entirely
  • ▲221 hp and 295 Nm combined, with 0-100 km/h in 7.9 seconds - quicker than anything else near the price
  • ▲A dedicated hybrid transmission rather than a CVT, which is smoother and more responsive in traffic
  • ▲6 years or 150,000 km vehicle warranty and 8 years or 160,000 km on the battery
  • ▲The Premium is genuinely well equipped: 540-degree camera, adaptive cruise, blind spot detection, lane change assist, panoramic roof, ventilated front seats, 13.2-inch screen and eight speakers
  • ▲Dual-zone climate control and second-row vents on both variants
  • ▲Locally assembled near Faisalabad with a national dealer network behind it

The bad

  • ▼The Comfort has TWO AIRBAGS - dual front only, no side and no curtain airbags - which at PKR 70 lac is hard to defend, and NexGen's website does not disclose it
  • ▼The Comfort also goes without a reversing camera, runs halogen headlamps and has two speakers
  • ▼Rs 10 lac between the variants is a wide gap, and the cheaper car is the one most people will be shown first
  • ▼Prices rose Rs 300,000 on 1 October 2026 and the tax change behind that applies to every hybrid sold here
  • ▼5.3 L/100 km is a WLTP laboratory figure; expect nearer 16 km/l in Pakistani city traffic
  • ▼NexGen publishes no kerb weight and no boot volume for either variant
  • ▼Neither variant offers all-wheel drive
  • ▼NexGen's own downloadable price list is out of date and still shows the pre-October prices

Safety

What is known about this car's safety in Pakistan
This is the section to read before choosing a variant, because the difference between the two J5s is not a matter of trim.

NexGen's J5 model page states the car is "Equipped with 6 airbags, including dual front airbags, front side airbags, and side curtain airbags". Their own price list shows that describes the Premium.

The SHS HEV Comfort's equipment list reads, in full, "Dual Front Airbags". There are no front side airbags and no side curtain airbags on that variant. Two.

The SHS HEV Premium's list reads "Dual Front Airbags, Front Side Airbags, Side Curtain Airbags". Six.

The gap continues through the active safety equipment. The Comfort has cruise control, the Premium has adaptive cruise control. The Comfort's list includes no reversing camera at all; the Premium has a 540-degree HD panoramic camera. The Premium adds blind spot detection, lane change assist, rear cross traffic assist, forward collision warning and intelligent high beam control - none of which the Comfort's list carries.

Both variants do get anti-lock brakes with brake assist and brake override, electronic brakeforce distribution, tyre-pressure monitoring, ISOFIX anchors, an engine immobiliser and a body anti-theft alarm. Both have driver seatbelt reminders; only the Premium adds the passenger reminder.

NexGen publishes no crash-test rating for the J5, from any programme. Pakistan has no NCAP of its own, so no car sold here carries an independent local crash rating.

FAQ

What is the price of the JAECOO J5 in Pakistan?

The SHS HEV Comfort is PKR 69,99,000 and the SHS HEV Premium is PKR 79,99,000, both ex-factory and inclusive of applicable taxes. Both rose Rs 300,000 on 1 October 2026 when hybrid sales tax went to 25 per cent. NexGen adds Rs 55,000 per unit for freight and transit insurance.

How many airbags does the JAECOO J5 have?

It depends entirely on the variant, and this is the most important thing to know about the car. The Comfort has TWO - dual front airbags only. The Premium has SIX, adding front side and side curtain airbags. NexGen's website says "6 airbags" without saying that only one variant has them.

What is the fuel average of the JAECOO J5?

JAECOO quotes 5.3 L/100 km on WLTP, which is about 18.9 km/l, with 950+ km of total range. In Pakistani conditions expect nearer 16-17 km/l in the city, where a hybrid does its best work, and a little less on a long motorway run.

Does the JAECOO J5 need to be plugged in?

No. It is a full self-charging hybrid, not a plug-in. The 1.83 kWh battery is charged by the engine and by regenerative braking. If you want a JAECOO you can plug in, that is the J7 SHS.

Which JAECOO J5 should I buy?

The Premium, and not narrowly. For Rs 10 lac it adds four airbags, a 540-degree camera, adaptive cruise, blind spot detection, LED headlamps, a 13.2-inch screen, eight speakers rather than two, a panoramic roof and ventilated front seats. The Comfort's two airbags are hard to accept at this price.

Is the JAECOO J5 141 hp or 221 hp?

221 hp. The 141 hp figure some listings carry is the 1.5 TGDI engine on its own, which makes 105 kW and 215 Nm. Combined with the electric motor the system produces 165 kW - 221 hp - and 295 Nm, and that is what determines how it drives.

What is the warranty on a JAECOO J5?

Six years or 150,000 km on the vehicle and eight years or 160,000 km on the battery, whichever comes first, published on NexGen's own brochure. The conditions behind those terms are not published, so get them in writing.

Who assembles JAECOO in Pakistan?

NexGen Auto Pvt Ltd, a Nishat Group company, at a plant near Faisalabad. OMODA & JAECOO launched here on 1 August 2025 and passed 10,000 locally assembled units in August 2026.

Is there an electric JAECOO J5?

A J5 BEV Premium Plus was shown at PAPS in September 2026 with a claimed 461 km of NEDC range, 155 kW and a 58.9 kWh battery, to be assembled locally. NexGen has announced no price and publishes no page or brochure for it yet.

JAECOO J5 or MG ZS Hybrid?

The MG ZS (2nd Gen) HEV runs from PKR 74,99,000 to PKR 78,99,000, between the two J5s. The J5 Premium is the stronger car on paper - 221 hp against the MG's output, a longer warranty and more driver assistance - but the J5 Comfort's two airbags make the MG the safer buy at the lower price.
