Our takeCarMania research desk

It is the default car in Pakistan and it earns a lot of that: strong resale, a dealer in every town, a gearbox and engine that will do 300,000 km, and running costs nobody has to guess at. What it does not give you is safety equipment. Two airbags across a range that reaches PKR 77 lacs is the hard fact here, and the Corolla Cross on the same showroom floor - from PKR 72.35 lacs - has seven plus stability control, hill-start assist and side curtains. Within the range, the 1.6 CVT-i at PKR 66,99,000 is the sweet spot: it adds vehicle stability control, cruise control, sports mode, paddle shift, LED projection headlamps and alloy wheels over the manual, all of which the base car goes without. The 1.6 MT is cheap transport with steel wheels, halogen lamps and no stability control.

The good & the bad

The good

  • ▲The strongest resale value of any sedan in Pakistan, and the broadest dealer and parts network
  • ▲A 470-litre boot and a 2,700 mm wheelbase give genuinely useful family space
  • ▲The 1.6 CVT-i and above add vehicle stability control, cruise control, sports mode, paddle shift and LED projection headlamps
  • ▲A 9-inch capacitive touchscreen with six speakers across the range, with wireless smartphone connectivity on the CVT variants
  • ▲The two 1.6 variants were recently reduced by PKR 1.03 lacs each
  • ▲Mechanically conservative - a naturally aspirated engine and a proven CVT, with no turbo or dual-clutch to worry about
  • ▲ISOFIX anchors and an immobiliser on every variant

The bad

  • ▼Two airbags on every variant up to PKR 77.09 lacs - driver and passenger only, no side and no curtain airbags
  • ▼The 1.6 MT has no vehicle stability control at all, along with steel wheels and halogen headlamps
  • ▼No driver-assistance equipment anywhere in the range - no blind-spot monitor, no lane keeping, no autonomous braking
  • ▼The Corolla Cross starts at PKR 72,35,000 with seven airbags, which makes the top Corollas difficult to recommend on safety
  • ▼A torsion-beam rear axle is basic for the money by current standards
  • ▼No hybrid Corolla sedan is offered in Pakistan, where the Corolla Cross hybrid returns about 17 km/l
  • ▼No independent crash rating exists for the car sold here

Safety

What is known about this car's safety in Pakistan
This is the part of the Corolla that needs saying plainly.

Toyota's own specification sheet for the Corolla Altis X gives the airbag line as "SRS Airbag: Dual (Driver + Passenger Side)" for every variant, from the PKR 60,99,000 1.6 MT to the PKR 77,09,000 Grande. Two airbags. No front side airbags, no side curtain airbags, anywhere in the range.

Vehicle stability control is not standard either. The specification sheet marks it absent on the 1.6 MT and present from the 1.6 CVT-i upwards. A buyer choosing the cheapest Corolla is choosing a car with two airbags and no stability control.

What is standard across the range: anti-lock braking with electronic brake distribution and brake assist, ISOFIX child seat anchors and an immobiliser. The CVT variants add an alarm, front and rear cameras and central locking with a speed-sensing lock.

There is no driver-assistance equipment on any Corolla sold here - no blind-spot monitor, no lane keeping assist, no autonomous emergency braking, no adaptive cruise control.

The comparison that matters is inside the same showroom. The Corolla Cross starts at PKR 72,35,000 - PKR 4.94 lacs more than a Corolla 1.6 CVT-i - and has seven airbags, vehicle stability control, traction control, hill-start assist and emergency brake signal on every variant.

Pakistan has no NCAP programme, so the car sold here carries no independent crash rating.

The Altis X range is PKR 60,99,000 for the 1.6 MT, PKR 66,99,000 for the 1.6 CVT-i, PKR 70,29,000 for the 1.8 CVT-i and PKR 73,39,000 for the 1.6 CVT-i Special Edition. The Grande is PKR 76,69,000 with beige interior and PKR 77,09,000 with black.

How many airbags does the Toyota Corolla have?

Two - driver and passenger only - on every variant including the Grande. Toyota's specification sheet lists "SRS Airbag: Dual (Driver + Passenger Side)" across the range. There are no side or curtain airbags at any price.

Did Toyota reduce the Corolla price?

Yes, on the two 1.6 variants. The 1.6 MT is now PKR 60,99,000, down from PKR 62,02,000, and the 1.6 CVT-i PKR 66,99,000, down from PKR 68,02,000 - PKR 1.03 lacs off each, on Toyota's own current price page.

What is the fuel average of the Toyota Corolla?

Owners record about 12.0 km/l in the city and 15.0 on the highway from the 1.6 manual, about 14.0 and 16.0 from the 1.6 CVT-i, and about 12.0 and 14.0 from the 1.8.

Which Toyota Corolla should I buy?

The 1.6 CVT-i at PKR 66,99,000. Over the manual it adds vehicle stability control, cruise control, sports mode, paddle shift, LED projection headlamps and alloy wheels, and it is also the most economical Corolla. The 1.6 MT has no stability control.

What is the difference between the Corolla 1.6 and 1.8?

The 1.8 makes 138 hp and 173 Nm against the 1.6's 120 hp and 154 Nm, and uses a Sport CVT-i. The 1.6 CVT is the more economical of the two in owner reports. Airbag count and driver assistance are identical - two airbags, none.

Toyota Corolla or Toyota Corolla Cross?

On safety the Corolla Cross is not close: seven airbags against two, plus stability control, traction control and hill-start assist on every variant. It starts at PKR 72,35,000, which is PKR 4.94 lacs above a Corolla 1.6 CVT-i and below the 1.6 Special Edition. The Corolla keeps the stronger resale and the bigger boot.

Is there a hybrid Toyota Corolla in Pakistan?

Not as a sedan. The hybrid is the Corolla Cross, which returns about 17 km/l in the city.

What is the warranty on a Toyota Corolla?

3 years or 100,000 km, whichever comes first, with extended options available.
