The Proton Saga is assembled by Al-Haj Automotive, the Al-Haj Group company holding the Proton franchise, at its plant in Karachi. Al-Haj launched Proton in Pakistan with the X70 and followed with the Saga, officially launched at a digital event on 4 April 2021. The Saga is Proton's oldest and best-known nameplate, dating to 1985 in Malaysia.
The car sold here is the third-generation Saga, which Proton launched globally in September 2016 and facelifted in 2019 and 2022. The 2019 revision matters for Pakistan: it replaced the earlier CVT with a Hyundai-sourced four-speed automatic, which is the gearbox local cars use. Proton launched a comprehensively redesigned Saga in Malaysia in November 2025 - that car has not come to Pakistan.
Three variants are offered: Saga MT at Rs 37.49 lacs, Saga AT at Rs 39.49 lacs and Saga ACE at Rs 40.99 lacs ex-factory. Competitively the Saga is unusual - a proper sedan priced against hatchbacks. Its rivals in practice are the Suzuki Cultus and Alto AGS, the Changan Alsvin, and at the top end the entry Yaris.
The Saga's proposition has always been sedan space and a safety-rated body for hatchback money. That remains true, and it remains why people buy it. What it is not is a modern or well-equipped car.
Every Proton Saga sold in Pakistan uses the same engine: a 1,332 cc naturally aspirated four-cylinder DOHC petrol with variable valve timing producing about 94 hp and 120 Nm, driving the front wheels. The MT has a five-speed manual; the AT and ACE use a four-speed torque-converter automatic, Hyundai-sourced, which replaced the earlier CVT in Proton's 2019 facelift. There is no turbo, hybrid or alternative engine locally. The tank holds 40 litres. Proton's new 1.5-litre engine and CVT, introduced on the redesigned Malaysian Saga in November 2025, are not offered here.
The Saga has been on sale since April 2021 and there is a substantial owner base reporting consistent figures. Owners typically report 10 to 14 km/l in the city with air conditioning running, and 16 to 20 at steady highway speeds, with one detailed report putting mixed driving at about 15 km/l combined. Those are creditable numbers for a naturally aspirated 1.3-litre sedan and reflect the car's light weight and modest power. The four-speed automatic is the limiting factor on the highway - with only four ratios the engine sits at higher revs at cruising speed than a modern six-speed would, which is why the highway figure, while good, is not as far ahead of the city figure as a better gearbox would allow.
