The Suzuki Alto is the entry point of the Pak Suzuki range and is assembled locally at Bin Qasim, Karachi. It launched on 15 June 2019 as the direct replacement for the Suzuki Mehran, which Pak Suzuki had built essentially unchanged since 1989. The local car is based on the seventh-generation Japanese-market Alto, a kei-car design introduced in Japan in December 2014 - so the platform is roughly twelve years old, and Japan has already moved to a generation Pakistan has not received.
The Alto is a 660 cc kei car adapted for Pakistani conditions rather than a car designed for this market. Pak Suzuki raised the ride height to 170 mm and fits air conditioning, but the body, the 2,460 mm wheelbase, the 145/80 R13 tyres and the four-seat cabin all carry over from Japanese kei-class regulations.
It is by a wide margin the most important car in the Pakistani market by volume, and its dominance has increased rather than faded - in July 2026 it accounted for roughly 42 percent of every passenger car sold in Pakistan. That reflects the structure of the market more than the merits of the car: with new-car prices having risen far faster than incomes, the Alto occupies the only price band a large share of buyers can still reach.
The 2026 lineup is three variants, all badged Upgraded: VXR manual, VXR AGS and VXL AGS. The stripped-out VX without air conditioning is no longer offered.
All variants use the 658 cc Suzuki R06A, a three-cylinder DOHC 12-valve all-aluminium petrol engine with multi-point injection and VVT, driving the front wheels at about 39 hp and 56 Nm. Two gearboxes are offered: a five-speed manual on the VXR, and Suzuki's AGS on the VXR AGS and VXL AGS. AGS is an automated version of the same five-speed manual with an electro-hydraulic clutch and shift actuator - not a CVT or a torque-converter automatic, which is why it produces the characteristic pause between shifts owners remark on.
Fuel economy is the Alto's defining characteristic. Owner-submitted data shows roughly 16 to 18 km/l in city driving and 20 to 22 on the highway, aggregated across several hundred reports. Per-variant figures put the VXR manual at around 20 km/l combined and the VXL AGS at around 19, with manual cars slightly ahead. City figures drop meaningfully with air conditioning running in summer and in heavy stop-start traffic. The 27-litre tank gives a practical range of roughly 480 to 590 km.
