The Toyota Fortuner is a body-on-frame seven-seat SUV assembled locally by Indus Motor Company from CKD kits at Port Qasim, Karachi. Indus began local Fortuner assembly in 2013 with the first-generation car, and the second generation arrived locally in 2016. Indus is the only Pakistani assembler building an SUV at this price point locally, and in August 2024 it began exporting locally built Fortuner, Hilux and Corolla Cross units to Oceania.
The second-generation Fortuner is derived from the Hilux ladder-frame pickup. Pakistan's lineup tracks the global car: the Sigma 4 diesel arrived in 2017, the 2.7 G entry petrol in 2020, the facelift in early 2021, the Legender in 2022 and the GR-S around March 2023.
In the local market the Fortuner has essentially no direct locally assembled rival. It competes against imported SUVs - the Kia Sorento, Hyundai Santa Fe, Haval H6 and higher Changan and MG models - and against the used-import Prado.
Its buyers are largely business owners, government and agency fleets, and rural users who need genuine ladder-frame durability and 4x4 capability rather than crossover refinement.
Two engines. The 2.7-litre petrol (2,694 cc 2TR-FE) is a DOHC 16-valve unit with Dual VVT-i producing about 164 hp at 5,200 rpm and 245 Nm at 4,000 rpm, powering the G (4x2) and V (4x4). The 2.8-litre turbodiesel (2,755 cc 1GD-FTV) with a variable-nozzle turbocharger, intercooler and balance shaft produces about 201 hp and 500 Nm from 1,600 rpm, powering the Sigma 4, Legender and GR-S. Every current variant uses a six-speed automatic, with paddle shifters on the Legender and GR-S. There is no manual gearbox and no hybrid in the Pakistani range.
Owner data puts the Fortuner at roughly 8 to 9 km/l in the city and 9 to 11 on the highway from its 80-litre tank, with the diesels at about 9 city and 11 highway and the petrols at 8 city and 9 to 10 highway. Individual reports on the 2.7 petrol are considerably harsher than the aggregate - owners report 5 to 6 km/l in city driving, rising by only 1 to 2 km/l on open roads. A Legender diesel owner reports about 10 km/l in city use. The practical takeaway is that the diesel roughly doubles the petrol's real-world city economy.
